Gabes

The Gateway to the South

Gabes is the last stop of the south heading railway line, and known as the “gateway to the south”. A stop in Gabes is typical in many tours on the way into the Sahara and likely to Matmata. Gabes itself isn’t too much of a tourist destination, but a visit to the spice market is quite common and interesting. It is also a good way to split up a long drive.

Value for money is very good in Gabes, and there are enough hotel s and restaurants to give you a good selection for a short stay. While there, visit the fishing port, the nearby oases, or the market.

If you want to go further south than Gabes, you will have to catch a bus or a shared taxi, as the train does not go further.
